Overview

Summary of Role

The Senior Financial Crime Compliance Officer plays a key role in supporting the Manager FCC in the operational oversight of the Bank’s AML/CFT and financial crime compliance framework. This role involves handling more complex investigations and escalations, reviewing and guiding the work of junior officers, and ensuring high-quality execution of daily compliance activities in line with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct advanced transaction monitoring reviews and investigations, ensuring findings are properly documented and escalated to the Manager FCC where required.
  • Manage and monitor transactions, manage alerts and cases from systems and tools and identify behaviours which are deemed suspicious and escalate as per internal policies and procedures, as well as making recommendation on action required;
  • Act as support to the team in the assistance given to the Business Relations and Operation teams
  • Perform enhanced due diligence (EDD) on higher-risk clients, preparing recommendations for the Manager FCC.
  • Support the drafting, review, and implementation of financial crime compliance policies, procedures, and working instructions.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on KYC files, ongoing monitoring reviews, and sanctions screening alerts.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc AML/CFT reports for internal use and for submission to regulators as required.
  • Assist in responding to queries and information requests from the FIAU, MFSA, and other competent authorities.
  • Participate in financial crime risk assessments and assist in the implementation of enhancements to controls.

Requirements
  • Strong working knowledge of AML/CFT regulations and regulatory expectations for credit institutions.

  • Skilled in transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and investigative procedures.

  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues across departments.

Education and Experience
  • At least 2–3 years’ experience in AML/CFT or financial crime compliance, preferably in a banking or financial institution setting.

  • A relevant qualification in Law, Banking & Finance, Economics, Accountancy, or another related field (minimum diploma level; degree preferred).

  • Familiarity with Maltese and EU AML/CFT framework
